What is PEFC?
The goal of PEFC's forestry certification is to develop sustainable forestry with a good balance between production, the environment and social interests.
The goal of PEFC's traceability certification is to provide a reliable and credible method for companies to provide their customers with information on where the raw material for their products comes from.
The PEFC marking on a product is a clear message to the customer that it is made from raw material from sustainably used forests. The standard concerns forest owners (the Forestry Standard) and the timber organization / industry (Chain of Custody), eg. sawmills, paper industry, printing and construction trade.
Why PEFC certification?
The market for certified products is growing. More and more consumers want to know that the goods they buy are manufactured in an environmentally friendly way and under good social conditions. This also applies to wood products and wood products. Certification of forestry and labeling of wood products is the forest and timber industry's way of showing consumers that they produce and sell products that come from sustainably used forests.
What does the legislation look like?
As of March 2013, actors dealing in timber and timber products are affected by the EU timber production (EU No 995/2010). It means that it is prohibited to place illegally harvested timber, or products made of it, on the EU internal market. In addition, the regulation requires that anyone dealing with timber or timber products must be able to show that the raw material is not illegally harvested. PEFC traceability standards are adapted to these EU requirements. This means that companies that become traceability certified according to PEFC also fulfill the requirements set by the Timber Regulation.
There are requirements for working conditions for employees in the PEFC standard. The requirements are based on the ILO Declaration on basic principles and rights in working life.
Why Bureau Veritas?
Bureau Veritas is the obvious choice as we have the opportunity to offer certification of both forestry (the forestry standard) and the producer chain (the Chain of Custody standard). We have long experience in PEFC certification.
NEW PEFC STANDARDS FOR TRACKABILITY AND USE OF TRADEMARK HAVE BEEN ADOPTED BY PEFC'S GENERAL MEETING.
